This piece is inspired by my four years living and working in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The Sacred Heart is one of the most common motifs in religious folk art created in Mexico and found throughout the country. One can find hearts made beautifully from precious metals with gemstones, to crudely constructed tin, wood, clay, plastic and paint. The juxtaposition of materials as symbols of divinity is my inspiration to create this Sacred Heart. Traditionally, the heart represents divine love for humanity while the fire represents the transformative power of divine love.

The heart, a silver and copper shaped box, is held (protected) in a silver, gold and gem laced nest. The heart can be opened (awakened). Within the heart rests a silver marigold to be worn as a pendant. The marigold in Mexico is the flower of death, which life to death has no end. The pearls and garnets that suspend the Sacred Heart represent the vehicle of flesh and blood from our earth journey. Divinity has no beginning or end - nor does beauty, it just is.

Materials: Sterling silver, Argentium silver, 18k gold, copper, garnets, crystal and pearls.
